The cool factor of Mario flipping from 2D to 3D is innovative and lets you think outside the box.
The game is fairly simple but seems to have lots of extras for completes. Seems to be a replay factor on previous levels, since once you complete a chapter you can go back, and with your higher experience levels, you can use your new powers to explore the levels.
The game has some good puzzle solving. And so far, at the early stages hasn't been repetitive.
There are some very good touches in design. The text scrolling is a little annoying as is the repetitive sound for text scrolling, but there a few lines that bring a smile to your face. You can't skip through repetitive tasks, i.e. going on an elevator, or talking to certain characters, which becomes annoying. However, the innovation and fun factor, plus possible nostalgia for old school Mario makes the game very playable.
You should not try to compare it to Zelda, it's not even in the same league, however, for games out there right now, this would be one which will be very playable.
Might skew to younger, but any adult who played the original NES back in the eighties will get a kick. The colors are vibrant and cartoony. Probably can be solved fully without referring to a code book. Saving is intuitive and allows you to make backup copies, so you can ensure you won't get stuck. (However, I doubt that you could ever place yourself in a situation where you couldn't finish, since you can always go back to homeworld and easily rack up points to ensure you can continue.) If the game in parts would move faster, (without text scrolling) it would be infinitely better, but still enjoyable in its current iteration.
